Over the last couple of weeks Twitter users have been noticing subtle changes to the social media platform that was but in many ways is still twitter. The site was acquired by Elon Musk on October 27th 2022 and has seen a massive overhaul since but one of the more noticeable changes has been the appearance of “X” everywhere.
X.com was the former banking service that Elon Musk Co-Founded in 1999 with Harris Fricker, Christopher Payne and Ed Ho which in March 2000 would go onto merge with Confinity to produce PayPal. In September 2000 Musk would be voted off the board of X.com due to technological differences between employees at the time however Musk would remain the biggest shareholder in the company at the time Ebay acquired PayPal in October 2002.
In 2017 Musk would purchase the X.com domain for its “sentimental value” and has since remained in Musks use and has been used for advertising a hat sale that “The Boring Company” (Another Musk company) was using.
Twitter.com is still the main domain you will be redirected to (for now) however X.com now redirects to Twitter.com. The Google Play Store the App is now called “X” and is represented by an X meanwhile the iOS app store requires a 2-character minimum the app is still twitter but is represented by an X logo. The site also shows in tabs that the icon is now an X and that the page you are on and “X”.
The company office in San Francisco has also gone under a change to make it so that Twitter is no longer on the building with a big strobing X is on top of the building.
Elon Musk has stated that he wants “X” to be the everywhere place, likely inspired by the “Super Apps” that are very big in China that take multiple services and meld them into one.
