Taylor Swift and the Rising Threat of Deepfakes

Posted on Fri, 26 January 2024

Fans of the singer Taylor Swift were surprised on social media this Thursday, the 25th, with images generated by artificial intelligence (AI) depicting the singer in an explicit manner.

The images show the singer with exposed breasts, being groped by fans during an American football game. The singer is in a relationship with professional player Travis Kelce.

Such images are known as fake nudes, or "deepnudes." It is a variation of the term "deepfake," a description for fake images, videos, or audios generated by AI, used to refer to false photos of individuals in the nude or in sexual scenarios.

This practice has become a growing challenge, especially for women

Posted on the X website, formerly Twitter, the doctored photos of Taylor Swift sparked outrage among fans of the pop artist. They started the hashtag "Protect Taylor Swift," sharing videos of the singer's performances to make the fake images "disappear" amid tweets of support.

"Deepnudes" are a variation of the term "deepfake" and refer to fake images of people nude or in sexual scenarios generated by artificial intelligence. In the US, only a handful of states have enacted laws that prohibit the sharing of deepfake pornography in any capacity, and only some of them actually criminalize the act. Legislation provides for penalties ranging from six months to one year in detention and a fine for those who produce such content without the consent of the participants. There is also imprisonment from one to five years for those who share such content.
